My name is Jamey-Leigh Réso, born on March 9th 1994, in Paramaribo Suriname. I grew up around a musical family but I was always the odd one out, couldn't even bop my head to the beat. When I was around 13 my uncle convinced me to take drum lessons, so that he and I could start a family band. Soon after I joined a cover band started by a few of my friends. It was all in good fun, but I realized that it could be something much more. In 2012 I met the brothers Xillan & Jeangu Macrooy, we quickly became friends and after playing with their band for a year, I decided to pick up guitar and started writing my own songs. I hopped in the studio with Jim Westfa Jr. and released my first song "Don't You Dare".
I didn't want to release music under my own name, because I didn't want people to know it was me. I wanted to prove a point that a name doesn't matter, as long as the music's good. I chose the name 'Carter' because of something my uncle once told me. He said if he ever were to have a son of his own, he would name him Carter. He passed away in 2011 and seeing as I owe everything I know about music to him, I adopted the name Carter, as his spiritual and musical son.
In 2016 my friend, Kenzo, approached me to make a song for a short-movie project he was working on. It was right around that time I met Marcus, a producer who was looking for a musician to work with. Together we pitched 'Human' to Kenzo, he was so blown away by it that he decided to turn his short-movie into a music video. Fueled with inspiration, I wrote and recorded more songs which turned into an EP. We released the EP in 2017 under the name it 'Tranga', which means hard or strong in our native tongue.
On the 9th of June 2017, there was a special full moon named "Strawberry Moon". The day I fell in love. The theme for the upcoming EP is Pain, Love and Balance. That night was the perfect example of all those three things, and how you can't have pain without love or the other way around. This is why I've chosen to name the new EP 'Strawberry Moon'.
G.G. IN NETFLIX SERIES ON MY BLOCK
It's been a lifelong dream to have one of my songs serve as soundtrack to a series and with the help of Songtradr, we have been able to do just that. My song G.G. can be heard in the 7th episode of the first season of "On My Block".
The series follows a quartet of bright, street-savvy friends who are navigating their way through high school, including all of the triumph, pain and newness they experience along the way. Lifelong friendships are tested as Monse, Ruby, Jamal and Cesar confront the challenges of adolescence and life in their predominantly Hispanic and black neighborhood in South Central Los Angeles in this coming-of-age comedy series.
